Job description

As an Automation Engineer, you will join our Engineering Consulting team and support a diverse portfolio of client projects across industrial manufacturing, energy, infrastructure, utilities, and process industries.

We are looking for an engineer with a strong background in Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and industrial automation. You will act as a trusted technical consultant, working closely with client stakeholders to design, develop, implement, and optimize automation solutions that improve operational efficiency, reliability, safety, and sustainability.

This role offers exposure to a wide variety of technologies, industries, and customer environments, with a strong focus on DCS engineering, control system modernization, and digital transformation projects.

Your Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, configure, and maintain industrial automation and control systems for a wide range of client projects.
  • Engineer, configure, and optimize Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for process and industrial environments.
  • Develop and maintain automation applications using Schneider Electric Modicon PLCs, AVEVA System Platform (Wonderware), PLC, SCADA, and HMI platforms.
  • Analyze customer requirements and translate them into functional and technical specifications.
  • Design control system architectures and support system integration with third-party equipment and industrial networks.
  • Support DCS migration, modernization, and system upgrade projects while minimizing operational downtime.
  • Perform PLC and DCS programming, testing, debugging, and validation activities.
  • Execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), commissioning, and start-up support at customer sites.
  • Troubleshoot complex automation and process control issues and provide technical expertise to improve plant reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including process engineers, software developers, maintenance teams, and project managers.
  • Support the implementation of Industrial IoT, data acquisition, MES, and Industry 4.0 solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, quality requirements, functional safety, and industrial cybersecurity best practices.
  • Prepare technical documentation, user manuals, and project reports.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives across projects.

Your Profile

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in industrial automation, process control, or control systems engineering.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and industrial automation platforms.
  • Experience with Schneider Electric Modicon PLCs and AVEVA System Platform is highly desirable.
  • Experience with PLC programming, SCADA, and HMI development.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profinet, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, OPC UA, or similar.
  • Experience with commissioning, troubleshooting, FAT, SAT, and validation activities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a customer-focused mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Fluent in English; Dutch is considered an advantage.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites within the Netherlands.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with DCS platforms such as Honeywell Experion PKS, Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Foxboro DCS, ABB 800xA, Emerson DeltaV, Yokogawa CENTUM VP, or similar.
  • Experience with Schneider Electric Triconex safety systems (SIS).
  • Experience with Industrial IoT, MES, smart manufacturing, or Industry 4.0 initiatives.
  • Knowledge of energy management systems and sustainable industrial solutions.
  • Experience in consulting, engineering services, or project-based environments.
  • Familiarity with industrial cybersecurity standards such as IEC 62443 and functional safety standards (IEC 61511/61508).
  • Experience within process industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, oil & gas, utilities, or energy.
